Evaluating Seismometer Orientation of ChinArray-I Using Teleseismic P-Waveand Rayleigh-Wave Polarization

  • 摘要: 准确估计地震计的布设方位角对基于三分量记录的地震学研究具有重要作用。利用基于远震P波和Rayleigh面波偏振特征的两种独立方法,对2011至2013年在南北地震带南段布设的中国地震科学探测台阵(ChinArray)一期仪器的方位角偏差进行了评估。研究使用了震中距30-90度的696个远震的P波及震中距10-170度的1928个地震的Rayleigh面波,两种方法所得到的仪器方位角偏差具有较好的一致性。在全部352个台站中,除4个台站可用数据较少未进行评估外,281个台站的南北分量与地理北向偏差小于10度,21个台站在10-20度之间,其余台站则出现故障或偏差较大。获得的结果与前人基于远震P波的结果类似,但存在7个台站与其结果差异超过5度,进一步的分析表明这些台站在不同时段方位角偏差发生过改变,需要分时段进行评估。同时,研究发现仪器不同分量的增益故障会影响仪器方位角偏差估计,可与噪声功率谱结合开展协同评估。研究结果对中国地震科学探测台阵一期数据的准确使用以及相关流动台阵的质量评估具有参考价值。
     

     

    Abstract: The accurate estimation of seismometer orientation is critical for seismological studies relying on three-component seismic records. In this study, we estimated the seismometer orientations of 352 broadband seismic stations from ChinArray phase I, which located in the southern section of North-South Seismic Zone during 2011-2013. Two independent polarization analysis approaches are adopted using both the teleseismic P-wave and Rayleigh surface wave. In total, the P waves from 696 teleseismic events with epicentral distance 30-90 degrees and Rayleigh waves from 1928 events and events from 10 to 170 degrees were used respectively for orientation estimation. The results from the two methods show a comparatively good consistency. Among 352 stations, there are 4 stations having records of less than 10 events , which are not evaluated. For the others, 281 stations have orientation deviations of less than 10 degrees from the north, 21 stations are between 10 and 20 degrees, and the remaining stations have much larger deviations or instrument failure. The results are similar to those of previous researchers from teleseismic P-waves analysis, but there are 7 stations inconsistent with their results showing deviations larger than 5 degrees. Further analysis shows the orientations of these stations are time dependent and change during the entire operation period. Furthermore, anormal gains between 3-component channels can produce bias on the orientation estimation, which can be distinguished by jointly inspecting the noise power spectrum. The approaches and results of current study provide orientation correction information for ChinArray phase I and can also be applied for other mobile stations for better data quality evaluations.
